Vaping and Smoking Raise Lung Cancer Risk, New Study Confirms
Combining Vaping and Smoking Increases Risk Eightfold
Researchers Find Strong Link Between Lung Cancer and Combined Tobacco Use
A new study has confirmed what experts have long suspected: people who vape and smoke tobacco face higher risks for lung cancer than if they engage in either habit alone.
The study, published in the journal Cancer, found that vaping combined with cigarette smoking was eight times more common in people with lung cancer compared to those without the disease.
The researchers also found that people who vaped and smoked tobacco were more likely to have a type of lung cancer called adenocarcinoma, which is often more difficult to treat.
"Our findings suggest that vaping combined with cigarette smoking may increase the risk of lung cancer," said lead author Dr. Jessica Wang of the University of California, San Francisco.
Wang said that the study does not prove that vaping causes lung cancer, but it does provide strong evidence that the two habits are linked.
"We need more research to understand the long-term health effects of vaping," Wang said. "But in the meantime, people who are concerned about their lung health should avoid both vaping and smoking cigarettes."
