Portugal cruise past Turkey in Euro 2024 opener
Goals from Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes secure comfortable win
Portugal made a winning start to their Euro 2024 campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Turkey in Group F.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for Portugal in the 15th minute, firing home a low drive from the edge of the area. Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead just before half-time, curling a free-kick into the top corner.
Portugal continued to dominate after the break and added a third goal through Joao Felix in the 65th minute. Turkey rarely threatened and Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio was largely untroubled throughout the match.
The win moves Portugal top of Group F, ahead of Spain on goal difference. Turkey, meanwhile, are bottom of the group after their opening defeat.
Portugal will be confident of reaching the knockout stages of the tournament, having impressed in their opening match. They face Spain in their next match, in a game that could decide who wins the group.
Turkey, on the other hand, will need to improve significantly if they are to have any chance of qualifying for the last 16. They face the Netherlands in their next match, in a game that could prove to be crucial in their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
